Our Family

The Chelidzes have been living in Ushguli for centuries. Roland keeps on the tradition of the family and also looks after the family tower in the village, which dates back to the 12th century. Gulo was also born in Ushguli and her family has also a long history of living in the Svanetian mountains. Our main income has always been animal farming. We currently have 20 cows, 15 pigs, 10 sheep and 10 goats to look after.

While our oldest son Berdia has moved abroad, our younger sons Batcho and Simon come up in the summer time to help us with our daily work. They are also very brave singers - which is a treat for Roland, who loves to sing the old Svanetian folk songs, which are also part of the polyphonic music tradition of Georgia.

We now operate our little guest house to open our life to people from all over the world to get to know our culture and our way of life - and we love to share our experiences and the rich history of Svaneti with our guests.
